If you haven’t already discovered the wonderful resource that is The World of Level Design, then it’s time that you did. This website not only has a raft of wonderful tutorials, it also gives you the low-down on effective level design. Level design is one of the key issues not only when designing all gameplay – from 2D to 3D computer games (and even board games). This particular tutorial details the design of choke points in game levels – how to manage them in the context of 3D multiplayer team games. However, choke points are important for any type of gameplay – they are the areas that you usually have to either defend or defeat in a game in order to achieve the level’s goal. Alex Galuzin has even posted a detailed breakdown of the process of level design on his useful blog. One thing I like about this blog is the video that is accompanied by a textual article – helpful for those of us with slower internet connections, or for those who simply like to read rather than watch.
